At our architecture and interior design studio, FFWD, every project represents a new opportunity to test our creativity and technical skills. Recently, we completed the interior renovation of a home in Barcelona, the GV125 project, and we want to share the difficulties we faced and how we overcame them to achieve the final result.

Initial Challenges

1. Spatial Limitations The house had a very compartmentalized layout, with small and poorly lit spaces. The challenge was to transform this layout into an open, fluid, and functional space that maximized natural light and a sense of spaciousness.

Solution: We opted for an open-plan layout, removing unnecessary partitions and creating a continuous space where the living areas visually connected. The use of transparent materials such as glass allowed light to flow through, creating a brighter and more welcoming environment.

2. Integration of Modern Installations Another challenge was the integration of new installations (HVAC, lighting, and home automation systems) without compromising the aesthetic of the design.

Solution: We designed false ceilings and custom-made furniture elements to conceal these installations. Additionally, we worked with an integrated control system that allows all installations to be managed from a single device, adding functionality without affecting the visual appeal of the project.

3. Preservation of Historical Elements The house had some historical elements that we wanted to preserve and integrate into the new design, such as the ceilings with moldings and the solid wood doors.

Solution: We carefully restored these elements and combined them with contemporary materials, creating a dialogue between the old and the new. This combination added character and uniqueness to the project, maintaining the original essence of the house.

Design Strategies

1. Use of Sustainable Materials We ensured the use of sustainable and high-quality materials, both for finishes and furniture. This decision not only contributes to environmental sustainability but also guarantees the long-term durability and maintenance of the space.

2. Client Participation Throughout the design and execution process, we maintained constant communication with the client, adapting the project to their needs and preferences. This open dialogue was key to ensuring that the final result was exactly what the client desired.

3. Attention to Detail in Execution Precision in the execution phase is crucial to transforming an idea into reality. We worked closely with builders and craftsmen to ensure that every detail was executed with the utmost care, faithfully reflecting the projected design.
