Interior renovation of a flat in Barcelona's Eixample

The interior renovation project is developed on a portion of a dwelling located in an Eixample building in Barcelona, which had previously undergone an intervention in the 1990s. That earlier renovation had excessively fragmented the space, generating a sequence of small rooms with very limited natural lighting. The starting point of the project has therefore been the need to reverse this compartmentalization and recover a spatial reading more consistent with the original typology of the Eixample dwelling.
The architectural proposal sets out a reorganization of the interior layout with the aim of generating spaces that are as open and fluid as possible, while maintaining a functional configuration of two bedrooms. Visual continuity and flexibility of use are prioritized through the reduction of opaque partition elements and the concentration of service cores, allowing for a greater perceptual spaciousness of the main areas. This new organization promotes a direct relationship between the different rooms and substantially improves the spatial quality of the dwelling.
At the same time, the project highlights the original elements characteristic of Eixample dwellings that were still preserved—such as ceilings, joinery, or moldings—integrating them into a contemporary, clean, and abstract language. The intervention combines these heritage elements with current materials and solutions, creating a balance between memory and modernity. One of the main objectives has been to optimize the entry of natural light from the rear façade and to channel it toward the darkest areas of the dwelling through the opening of spaces and the creation of transverse visual connections, significantly improving interior lighting and comfort conditions.
